Ed Gonzalez was elected the 30th Sheriff of Harris County in November 2016. He is serving his second term after being re-elected to office by Harris County voters in November 2020.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office performs a wide variety of public safety, law enforcement, and emergency response roles. The agency is responsible for patrolling neighborhoods, helping prevent and investigate crimes, managing the safety and needs of its jail population, providing important rehabilitation programs and re-entry services, and preparing for and responding to disasters.
